Riverside man, 56, killed after JV hit and run, ID’d
JURUPA VALLEY — Authorities are investigating the hit and run death of a 56-year-old Riverside man, who died in Jurupa Valley after he was struck by a motorist who then fled the scene. The deadly collision happened early Saturday morning, March 23, on Van Buren Blvd., 75 ft north of Jurupa Rd., according to officials investigating the man’s death.
Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner officials have since identified Robert Thurmond as the man killed by the hit and run driver. A coroner’s release indicate Thurmond passed away at the scene, and was pronounced deceased within minutes of the collision, at 4:40 a.m.

Deputies assigned to the Jurupa Valley Police Department, along with other emergency personnel, responded to the area of Van Buren Blvd. just north of Jurupa Rd. at 4:36 a.m., after receiving a report of “a male laying in the roadway with obvious signs of trauma,” Riverside Sheriff’s Sgt. Raemie Wood later explained.
When officials arrived, they found Thurmond’s lifeless body in the roadway. Upon closer examination, deputies observed he had “injuries … consistent with being struck by a vehicle,” said Wood. Deputies determined the victim had already succumbed to his traumatic injuries and pronounced the victim deceased.
Members of Jurupa Valley PD’s Traffic Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation into the fatal hit and run. While officials conducted there investigation, parts of the intersection were closed to through traffic.
During their preliminary, on-scene investigation, deputies determined Thurmond “was running across Van Buren Blvd. from the Chevron Gas Station, when an unknown vehicle struck the victim and fled the scene,” according to Wood.
Officials have not determined if alcohol or drug impairment were factors in the collision and are hoping someone who witnessed the collision or knows the identity or whereabouts of the person who struck Thurmond and fled the scene will step forward with what they know.
Jurupa Valley PD’s investigation is ongoing.

Trevor has been married for more than 28 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and his “fluid family” includes 13 children and 15 – but soon to be 16 – grandchildren.
