Intoxicated Perris man, 65, killed crossing Hwy 74

MEADOWBROOK — A reportedly intoxicated pedestrian died Tuesday evening, March 19, after he was struck while trying to cross Highway 74 in the rural community of Meadowbrook, between the cities of Perris and Lake Elsinore. The driver who struck and fatally injured the man did not stop and fled the scene of the collision, which CHP later said happened near Meadowbrook Market, about 375 feet west of Greenwald Ave.

According to CHP, during their investigation, officers “detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from the victim,” who they reported had been “wearing dark clothing in an area with no street lights.”

CHP, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire, and other emergency personnel, were dispatched to the collision around 8:13 p.m.

When officials arrived they found the victim, who had sustained major traumatic injuries. AMR rushed the man by ground ambulance to Inland Valley Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries about an hour later. A preliminary coroner’s release indicated the victim was pronounced deceased at 9:07 p.m.

Although various reports have indicated the victim was believed to be a 65-year-old, Perris resident, Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner officials have not yet released the man’s name, pending notification of the victim’s family.

The victim was fatally struck while he “tried to cross from the northbound right shoulder to the center median when he was struck in the westbound lane,” according to CHP. “After the crash, the vehicle fled the scene without rendering aid to the victim.”

CHP’s investigation is ongoing and officials have asked that anyone with information about the fatal collision, who witnessed the crash, or who knows the identity and whereabouts of the suspect who fled the scene, to call (951) 506-2000.

Trevor’s assignments included Corrections, Patrol, DUI Enforcement, Boat and Personal Water-Craft based Lake Patrol, Off-Road Vehicle Enforcement, Problem Oriented Policing Team, and Personnel/Background Investigations. He finished his career while working as a Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Investigator and was a court-designated expert in child abuse and child sex-related crimes.

Trevor has been married for more than 28 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and his “fluid family” includes 13 children and 15 – but soon to be 16 – grandchildren.
