2 adults & 2 boys hospitalized after San Jacinto “T-Bone” crash

SAN JACINTO — Four people, including two boys, were hospitalized after a two-vehicle “T-Bone” traffic collision at the intersection of Cottonwood and S. Lyon avenues in San Jacinto Thursday evening, April 4. Witnesses later reported that the driver who caused the crash when he ran a stop sign tried to flee, but collapsed in pain after his own injuries kept him from making it far from the scene.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the crash around 8:30 p.m., after receiving reports of the two-vehicle collision. 911 callers reported multiple victims, including two juveniles, and at least one driver who was trapped inside his wrecked vehicle.

When officials arrived they found two heavily damaged vehicles, described as a light-colored Mazda sedan and a white pickup truck. Vehicle parts and debris were spread throughout the intersection, and the roadway was blocked and impassable.

Cal Fire confirmed the driver of the Mazda and his two juvenile passengers were injured, as was the driver of the pickup truck who witnesses said tried to flee, but didn’t make it far due to his injuries. The Mazda driver was trapped inside the mangled wreckage of his sedan and firefighters performed a cut and rescue operation to free the man from his vehicle.

Two adult males and two juvenile boys were eventually transported by ground ambulances to area hospitals for further treatment of injuries Cal Fire described as minor to moderate.

Deputies who investigated the cause of the crash determined the accident happened when the driver of the pickup, who has not been publicly identified, failed to stop for a posted stop sign and plowed broadside into the Mazda, injuring its three occupants.

During their investigation, deputies called for the temporary closure of Cottonwood Ave. at the intersection, but the roadway was reopened at the conclusion of their initial, on-scene investigation.

It was not immediately known if the driver who ran the stop sign and reportedly tried to flee was arrested or was facing any charges related to the crash, and no further information was readily available.
