Bean-bag shotgun blast ends tense standoff with juvenile

REDDING — Reports of a person selling marijuana out of the back of their car at a Redding business led to a probation search at a nearby residence that ended after a tense standoff yesterday afternoon, Saturday, April 6. At the conclusion of their he investigation, officers arrested four people, including a 17-year-old probationer, for a variety of charges and warrants.

According to Redding PD, officers were forced to use a less-lethal, bean-bag shotgun to end a thirty minute standoff, after the juvenile refused to obey officers commands to exit his bedroom. When the juvenile, who has not been publicly identified due to his age, began “actively moving to unsearched areas of the room and moved his hands towards his waist, a less lethal shotgun was used to subdue him,” Redding Police Corporal Jeff Schmidt later explained.

Yesterday’s incident began just after 1 p.m., when Redding police officers received a call reporting a male trying to sell marijuana out of a black sedan parked on the west side of Dollar General on Lake Blvd.

When officers arrived they found the vehicle occupied by two adults, later identified as Brandon Peterson, 20, of Redding, and Jacob Ahern, 19, of Shasta Lake. Officers conducted a records check and learned Ahern is on probation for burglary.

While searching the pair’s vehicle in accordance with Ahern’s probation terms, officers found a loaded handgun, marijuana, and realistic-looking BB and airsoft guns.

“Officers also discovered Ahern had stolen items from the Dollar General,” Schmidt said after the incident and arrests.

Officers learned the handgun and marijuana belonged to a 17-year-old probationer out of Shasta Lake. The juvenile had been inside the Dollar General when officers made contact with and Perterson and Ahern, and had walked away from the area, avoiding officers.

Officers investigating reports of drug sales occurring at a Dollar General parking lot discovered a loaded handgun as well as several realistic-looking BB and airsoft guns.

Based on their investigation Redding PD officers, with assistance from Shasta County sheriff’s deputies, went to a residence on Williamson Rd. in Shasta Lake City to conduct a probation search and question the juvenile probationer.

When officers arrived they contacted nine people inside the residence and learned four of the subjects inside the home were on probation for various crimes. Officers also learned the 17-year-old was in his bedroom and began calling for the juvenile to come out of his room and surrender to officers, “but he refused to come out of the room,” according to Schmidt.

Officials spent the next thirty minutes trying to get the minor to surrender peacefully, but he refused to comply with them or exit his room.

Not knowing if the juvenile was in possession of additional weapons, officials cautiously approached the teen’s room, where they found him sitting on his bed. When the probationer continued to refuse officials’ orders and made furtive movements and moved his hands towards his waist, an officer at the scene discharged a less-lethal shotgun to subdue him. He was arrested without further incident.

The juvenile was taken to an area hospital for a medical clearance and was eventually booked into Juvenile Hall on suspicion of illegal possession of a loaded firearm and violation of probation.

In addition to the minor who was arrested, Ahern was booked into Shasta County jail for petty theft and violation of probation, Selena Linn, 18, and Lisa Deaton, 26, were booked for outstanding arrest warrants. Peterson and the other subjects found inside the residence were released without charges.
