CHP and Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, along with Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire and other emergency personnel, were dispatched to the scene shortly before 7:30 a.m., after receiving reports of a head-on collision involving two vehicles. 911 callers reported victims were trapped in both vehicles and that one had gone over the embankment.
When officials arrived they found two wrecked vehicles, described as a dark grey Dodge and a white sedan. Vehicle parts and debris were spread across the two-lane roadway, which was left blocked in both directions by the collision.

Firefighters and paramedics immediately began assessing the two drivers and sole occupants of the two vehicles and confirmed both victims were trapped inside their vehicles. Within minutes of their arrival, CHP’s log indicated that officials at the scene requested coroner officials respond to the location for one of the victims who had succumbed to their injuries and passed away at the scene.
The second victim was eventually extricated from their vehicle and transported by ground ambulance to an area hospital. Cal Fire later described that victim’s injuries as moderate.
CHP soon requested county roads to the location and called for the temporary closure of the roadway from SR-79 to Alessandro Blvd., at which time they began diverting traffic away from the scene of the deadly wreck.
Contacted for more information about the crash, CHP updated around 10 a.m. that the roadway would be reopened in about 30 minutes.
CHP is investigating the cause of the crash and their investigation was active and ongoing at the scene as of this report.
This is a developing story that will be updated as new information is available.
