Last Tuesday’s foot pursuit began moments after 2:45 p.m., when a Redding police officer spotted a man he recognized as a documented Sacramento gang member and wanted parolee near Best Western, in the area of Twin View Blvd. and Caterpillar Rd., just west of Interstate 5.

Before the officer could make contact with the man, he fled on foot. As the officer chased the fleeing man, he reported the alleged suspect was running northbound on Caterpillar Rd. toward Comfort Suites.

Officers who converged on the area requested assistance from CHP’s Northern Division Air Operations and ground officers, and CHP’s H-16 was soon dispatched to the area.

Although the pursuing officer temporarily lost sight of the fleeing man, officers who responded to the scene soon reported to emergency dispatchers they were preparing to begin tracking the fleeing man with a police K-9.

A few minutes later, as officers were tracking the suspect from where he had been last seen, SHASCOM received a 911 call from an automotive repair business at 5179 Caterpillar Rd. reporting a suspicious person lurking in the area. The description of the subject provided by the 911 caller matched the description previously provided by the officer who initially spotted and chased the man.

While officers held their perimeter and CHP’s H-16 circled overhead, a team of four officers responded to the business where the suspect had last been reported.

Just moments later, at 2:54 p.m., H-16’s aviation crew reported officers were actively pursuing the suspect, who then fought with and violently resisted officials trying to apprehend him. Nearly four full minutes later, officers on the ground updated they had overpowered the fleeing and combative subject and that he was in custody.

The suspect, who has not been named publicly, was later transported to Shasta County Jail where he was booked on a parole hold and other charges related to the incident.

No other citizens or officers were injured during the foot chase or subsequent arrest.
