Crash sends logs raining down onto I-5, crushing pickup

LAMOINE — Minor injuries were reported after a logging truck loaded with lumber overturned while crossing over Interstate 5, south of Lamoine, Tuesday morning, June 18. The solo-vehicle crash sent logs raining down onto the I-5, and crushed a Toyota pickup truck that had been passing below the McCardle Flat Rd. overpass when the accident occurred, about 35 miles north of Redding. Motorists later reported last Tuesday’s crash caused vehicles to back up more than ten miles and caused delays in travel times of up to several hours.

CHP later reported the logging truck had been traveling east on McCardle Flat Rd. when the big-rig driver lost control, causing the tractor-trailer combo to overturn and spill its load onto the southbound lanes of I-5.

Although a Toyota Tundra pickup truck that had been passing below the underpass when the big-rig overturned was crushed and heavily damaged by the logs as they fell onto the freeway below, the driver only sustained minor injuries, according to CHP.

After being treated at the scene, the Toyota driver was transported by ground ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Redding. The tractor-trailer driver was not injured in the crash.

Caltrans District 2 was called in to assist with traffic control and also helped CHP coordinate cleanup of the truck’s spilled load of logs.

The accident caused significant delays throughout the area and the full cause of the crash is still under investigation, according to CHP.
