Trio arrested after Redding traffic stop leads to guns, drugs

REDDING — An early morning traffic stop in Redding led to the arrest of three people for various warrants, as well as weapons and drug-related charges Monday, Aug. 12.

Yesterday morning’s traffic stop and arrests happened around 2 a.m., when a Redding police officer was conducting proactive patrol in the Hilltop Drive hotel corridor and spotted a silver Mitsubishi Galant driving in the area with expired registration. 

The officer conducted a traffic enforcement stop on the vehicle at Churn Creek Rd. near Cypress Ave. and contacted the three occupants of the vehicle. The trio was identified as Ruben Gonzales, 30 of Redding, Amanda Stout, 26, of Redding, and David Schmidt-Pike, 46, of Portland, OR, Redding Police Sgt. Brian Torum reported after the traffic stop and arrests.

During the traffic stop, the officer discovered Gonzales was on probation and had a felony warrant for his arrest.  After arresting Gonzales the officer searched the man’s vehicle, at which time he found a loaded 9mm Glock pistol with three fully loaded high-capacity magazines, approximately two and a half ounces of methamphetamine, and several items used for consuming drugs, according to Torum.

“Based on his investigation, Officer Jaegel arrested all three occupants for various drug and weapon related charges,” the Sgt. said.

Gonzales was arrested for possession of a controlled substance for sale, his unspecified felony warrant, and violation of probation. 

Stout was arrested for possession of a controlled substance for sale, transportation of a controlled substance, possession of heroin, and possession of drug paraphernalia. 

Schmidt-Pike was arrested for carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle, possession of a controlled substance for sale, and transportation of a controlled substance.

All three subjects were later booked at the Shasta County Jail in Redding for their various charges and warrant.

Trevor’s assignments included Corrections, Patrol, DUI Enforcement, Boat and Personal Water-Craft based Lake Patrol, Off-Road Vehicle Enforcement, Problem Oriented Policing Team, and Personnel/Background Investigations. He finished his career while working as a Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Investigator and was a court-designated expert in child abuse and child sex-related crimes.

Trevor has been married for more than 29 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and his “fluid family” includes 13 children and 15 – but soon to be 16 – grandchildren.
