Man attacks elderly Redding parents with pipe – Arrested after standoff

REDDING — Authorities say a man attacked his elderly parents with a “large metal pipe” and then barricaded himself inside their Redding residence Tuesday evening, Aug. 6.

The alleged suspect was eventually arrested with assistance from a police K-9 after the attack, which happened on the 1400 block of Arizona St., according to police.

City of Redding police officers responded to the home around 9 p.m., after receiving reports of a domestic disturbance occurring inside the residence.

As officers were racing to the home, they learned a male suspect was wielding a large metal pipe at his elderly parents, Redding Police Sgt. Sam Llamas reported after Saechao’s arrest. The man was later identified as Low Choy Saechao, 43, of Redding.

“Upon officers’ arrival, the elderly parents fled their residence in fear of Saechao,” after the still pipe-wielding man barricaded himself in the residence, Llamas explained.

Officers eventually gained access into the residence and after entering the home they found Saechao had locked himself in a bedroom.

Although officers began negotiating with Saechao, encouraging him to surrender, he refused to cooperate with officers and failed to comply with their orders to exit the bedroom.

“Officers were able to gain entry into the bedroom where they found Saechao with the metal pipe at his feet,” said Llamas; who reported that officers eventually deployed K-9 Hank to physically subdue the armed suspect so officers could take him into custody.

Based on their subsequent investigation, officers arrested Saechao, who was transported to an area hospital for dog bites and other injuries received during his apprehension.

After being treated and medically cleared, Saechao was booked into Shasta County Jail in Redding on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, terrorist threats, and resisting arrest.

No officers were injured while taking Saechao into custody and Llamas did not specify if Saechao’s parents were injured during the ordeal.
