OAK RUN — Authorities who investigated yesterday’s neighbor dispute and shooting in the mountain community of Oak Run have released further details about the incident, along with the names of the two people involved. The shooting happened on the 27000 block of Mineral School Rd. near Oak Run Rd., located south of SR-299E between Redding and Burney.

Deputies were first alerted to yesterday’s incident around 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 11, when a woman, later identified as 54-year-old Dawne Maddox called 911 and reported she had just been shot by her neighbor. The neighbor involved in the incident was later identified as Steve Smith, 58, Shasta County Sheriff’s Sgt. Marc St. Clair has since reported.
Although St. Clair did not specify the nature of the dispute that led to the shooting, official radio traffic at the time indicated that after calling 911, Maddox told SHASCOM emergency dispatchers she had just run over Smith with her quad and that he had then shot her with an unspecified firearm.
Maddox also said she had been hit by four of the rounds Smith had fired and that she had fled to her residence in terror, where she was trapped.
Moments later, Smith called 911 to report that Maddox had just run him over with a quad and that he had fired six rounds at her. He also said he believed he had hit her in doing so.
Deputies from both the Burney Station and Redding area raced to the scene, where they found Maddox’s overturned quad in the roadway. Within moments they also located Smith and detained him for further investigation.
They then rushed to the aid of Maddox at her residence, where “deputies immediately applied first aid … for her injuries until medical arrived on scene,” St. Clair explained.
Maddox was then rushed to a Redding hospital with serious injuries. “Her condition is unknown at this time,” according to the Sgt.; who said, “Additional information will be provided and Maddox’s condition updated once further information becomes available.”
During their investigation, deputies learned Smith is a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing or owning a firearm or ammunition.
“Steven Smith refused to provide deputies with a statement regarding the incident,” St. Clair explained; saying Smith was booked into Shasta County Jail on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm and assault with a deadly weapon/firearm.
Because officials have not specified what led to the dispute and Maddox running Smith over with her quad, it was not immediately known what charges, if any, that she might be facing upon her recovery.

Marc St. Clair told SCNS that due to the “rapidly evolving” nature of this active incident and the “risk of jeopardizing” the Sheriff’s ongoing shooting investigation, he could not release any further details than what had already been reported in this original article.
St. Clair also stated that further information and details would be released to SCNS as soon as possible.

OAK RUN — Authorities are at the scene of a possible neighbor dispute and shooting in the unincorporated mountain community of Oak Run, located between Redding and Burney.
Although very few details are available and SCNS is waiting for a response from Shasta County Sheriff’s officials, radio traffic indicates that the incident is actively under investigation on the 27000 block of Mineral School Rd., near Oak Run Rd., south of SR-299E.
Although Shasta County Sheriff’s Office has not yet responded to an SCNS request for information about the ongoing incident, at around 5:30 p.m. this afternoon, Wednesday, Sept. 11, radio traffic indicated officials were dispatched to the area after receiving at least two 911 calls reporting a neighbor dispute that led to a shooting.
According to radio traffic, a woman called 911 to report she had just been shot multiple times by a neighbor who was unknown to her after she ran him over with a quad. The woman also reported she had been shot four times in the neck and side and had fled to her home where she was trapped.
SHASCOM dispatchers then updated a male had called 911 to report that he had just shot a woman multiple times, possibly hitting her, after the woman ran him over with a quad. The man also said he had fired six rounds at the woman.
Based on the circumstances of the reported calls, deputies from around the surrounding areas along with medical personnel were dispatched to the scene. A REACH Air Ambulance was also notified in case needed; however, it was not immediately known if the air ambulance had been dispatched to the area or was already en route.
At 6:01 p.m., deputies who had raced to the area reported locating a male and detaining him. However, it was not immediately known if the detained man was the person who had called 911 to report the incident or if he was involved in any way.
Deputies also reported finding an overturned quad blocking the road and responded to a residence in the area. Once at the home they located a woman in need of emergency medical attention and requested medical personnel immediately respond to the location from where they had been staging nearby and waiting for the scene to be secured and safe.
About an hour later, other radio traffic indicated officials had begun processing the crime scene and collecting evidence related to the incident.
As this scene was still very active at the time of this initial report, an SCNS request for information was referred to an on-duty Watch Commander. It was later reported the supervisor was not immediately available to respond to media requests for information due to poor cell reception in the area.
As of this report, officials remain at the scene of this incident and their investigation is active and ongoing.
