Habitual Burney shoplifter nabbed outside Rex Club

BURNEY, Calif. — Authorities arrested a man who was again spotted stealing items from Burney’s Safeway early yesterday evening, Monday, Sept. 16.

Although the arrested man initially managed to flee from the area with merchandise he had stolen from the business, he was later spotted a short distance away and apprehended without incident less than an hour later.

Deputies assigned to Burney Sub-Station were first alerted to a shoplifting at Safeway, located at 37264 Main St. shortly after 6 p.m., after receiving the report of a habitual shoplifter who had once again been caught seen stealing merchandise from the business.

Because of several recent shoplifting incidents involving the same person, a deputy assigned to investigate the reported incident immediately recognized the alleged suspect as 24-year-old Mathew Jareth Jason McGowan.

Although the deputy searched the immediate area, he was not immediately able to locate McGowan.

About 45 minutes later, the deputy was responding to another dispatched call around 6:50 p.m., when he spotted McGowan about a half-mile from the Safeway, in front of the Rex Club.

Based on his earlier investigation, the deputy stopped and detained McGowan and arrested him.

Although McGowan was later cited and released, Shasta County Sheriff’s Sgt. Marc St.Clair later reported to SCNS that the multiple recent arrest reports, along with additional potential charges, are being forwarded to the DA’s office for McGowan’s multiple and ongoing recent shoplifting incidents.
