UPDATE: Alert citizens credited after Redding home invasion suspect captured

REDDING — A man who officials say entered an elderly Redding woman’s home and robbed her of her money before stealing her vehicle was arrested several hours after the ordeal that left the 79-year-old victim shaken, but otherwise uninjured.

Radio traffic at the time of the incident indicated the victim told emergency dispatchers the alleged suspect entered her home with a key he found in her parked vehicle. After confronting the victim inside her home the man told her he needed her car “to save his son’s life.” He then snatched the terrified woman’s car keys, money, and other personal belongings from her before fleeing the location in her vehicle.

As their investigation was getting underway, officers notified all surrounding law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for the victim’s stolen vehicle, a white Honda CRV with distinctive marks and stickers in the windows.

At around 12:23 p.m. the following afternoon, a citizen who read about the incident called 911 to report they saw the victim’s vehicle in the area of Oak Run Rd. near Highway 44, Redding Police Sgt. Brian Torum said in an updated press release after the man’s apprehension.

Based on the tip and sighting, a CHP helicopter and deputies from the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area and located the vehicle approximately twenty minutes later, according to Torum.

Upon locating the stolen Honda deputies detained 32-year-old, Redding resident, Dustin McIntire, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

After locating McIntire, deputies turned the man over to Redding PD officers and he was brought to the Redding Police Department for questioning about the home invasion robbery and vehicle theft.

During questioning, “officers and investigators were able to obtain numerous items of evidence that linked McIntire to the home invasion robbery,” according to Torum.

Based on their investigation, witness statements, and evidence recovered from the scene and within the stolen vehicle, officers arrested McIntire and he was subsequently booked into Shasta County Jail in Redding on suspicion of charges including robbery, burglary and vehicle theft. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

After McIntire’s arrest, Torum took the opportunity to thank area residents for their “vigilance … in helping to solve this case.”

“It would not have been resolved so quickly without their help,” said Torum.

REDDING — Authorities are asking for the public’s help identifying and locating a man they say entered an elderly woman’s Redding home and demanded her car keys and other valuables during a home invasion robbery and carjacking early Sunday morning, Nov. 24.

Radio traffic at the time indicated the terrified homeowner told SHASCOM emergency dispatchers the suspect told her that he needed to take her car “to save his son’s life”, before snatching her car keys, money, and other personal belongings from her and fleeing the location in her vehicle.

Redding police officers responded to a private residence in the 3000 block of Golf Dr. at 2:16 a.m., after a 79-year-old woman called 911 to report being the victim of a home invasion robbery, Redding Police Corporal Rob Garnero reported after the incident.

During their subsequent investigation, officers learned an unknown man entered the victim’s home with a key he found inside her vehicle, which had been parked in her carport, according to the Cpl.

After entering the woman’s residence and confronting the homeowner, the alleged suspect reportedly demanded the key to her vehicle and money from her wallet.

“In fear for her life, the victim provided her property to the suspect and she was not harmed,” explained Garnero; who said, “The suspect then ordered the victim into the back room of the residence as he fled the location in her vehicle.”

Although officers searched the surrounding area for the victim’s stolen car they were not immediately able to locate it or the suspect who reportedly stole it.

Garnero described the victim’s stolen vehicle as a white, 2006 Honda CRV, with California license plate 5XBR734. The car has two scratches on the front right fender, as well as breast cancer awareness and Santa Cruz stickers on its rear window.

The victim described the suspect as an unknown age white male adult with black, collar-length, curly hair, standing 5-foot-9, with a medium build. He was last seen wearing a white hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

Officers are investigating the incident as a robbery, carjacking, burglary and elder abuse case and officials have asked that anyone with information regarding the identity of the suspect or who knows where the stolen vehicle is to contact Redding Police Department at (530) 225-4200. Callers can refer to incident file number 19R077497 and can remain anonymous.
