Moreno Valley man, 20, ID’d after fatal Coachella shooting

COACHELLA — Deputies summoned to reports of a domestic disturbance in Coachella instead found themselves investigating the murder of a Moreno Valley man Saturday evening, Feb. 1. The victim’s lifeless body was discovered in a vehicle on the 84400 block of Calle Cathron near Avenida Razon, northeast of Fredrick St. and 51st Ave.

Deputies assigned to the Thermal Sheriff’s Station were dispatched to the residential neighborhood shortly before 11 p.m., after receiving reports of a possible domestic disturbance, Riverside Sheriff’s Sgt. Ben Ramirez later reported.

“Upon arrival, deputies located the parties involved in the disturbance call, but also found an unconscious male in a vehicle separate from the disturbance call,” explained Ramirez. “The male had sustained trauma from gunshots and was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Deputies secured the street and surrounding area as a crime scene and requested assistance from Thermal Station and Central Homicide Unit investigators, who ultimately assumed the murder investigation.

The shooting victim has since been identified as 20-year-old, Rene Arostegui, of Moreno Valley.

As the Sheriff’s investigation was continuing the victim’s white Nissan Altima was towed from the scene as evidence to the shooting.

Officials have not released any known motive for the deadly shooting and have said their investigation is ongoing and that no further information will be released at this time.
