Redding police officers responded to the mobile home park around 12:30 a.m., after receiving reports of a domestic disturbance and shots fired inside a mobile home, Redding Police Sgt. Paul Slagle reported after the incident and arrest.

Official radio traffic at the time indicated that while officers were racing to the location, the 911 caller reported that a man and woman were engaged in a heated argument. The caller also told SHASCOM emergency dispatchers that the alleged suspect had armed himself with a handgun and fired a round inside the home.

As officers converged on the area the caller updated that the man was still armed with the weapon and had barricaded himself inside the residence with the woman, who he was possibly holding hostage, according to scanner traffic.

When officers arrived they established a perimeter around the area and quickly located and detained the alleged gunman, and contacted the 911 caller and woman who were at the residence.

During their subsequent investigation, officers learned Mark Turnbaugh, 53, of Redding, “engaged in a verbal and physical altercation with his girlfriend inside of their residence,” explained Slagle.

“As the situation escalated, Mr. Turnbaugh retrieved a semi-automatic handgun from within a bedroom in the residence and discharged one bullet into the floor.”

Based on their investigation, officers arrested Turnbaugh and booked him into Shasta County Jail in Redding on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm, domestic violence, brandishing a firearm, criminal/terrorist threats, and illegal possession of an assault rifle.

Online jail records indicate Turnbaugh has since been released from custody.
