REDDING, Calif. — Authorities say an intoxicated felon, who was already on parole for a prior DUI with injuries conviction and was driving on a suspended license, was at fault in a two-vehicle collision that killed his passenger and injured another driver Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 8.

The deadly crash happened at the intersection of Lake Boulevard and Oasis Road, and forced the hours-long closure of the intersection.

City of Redding Police and Fire personnel, along with other emergency first responders, were dispatched to the scene around 4 p.m., according to Redding PD Sergeant Mark Montgomery.

When officials arrived they found a nearly unrecognizable black Toyota 4-Runner on its passenger-side against a light pole and a white Buick Riviera with major front-end damage in the middle of the roadway.

Firefighters discovered the driver and passenger of the 4-Runner were trapped inside the wrecked SUV and required extrication.

The driver, who has since been identified as Robert Christopher Maughs, 24, of Shasta Lake City, was transported by ground ambulance to Mercy Hospital with major injuries.

His passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to Montgomery; who added that as the deceased victim was being removed from the SUV, “firefighters discovered what they believed to be a firearm in the decedent’s front waistband.”

“A closer inspection revealed it was a BB gun designed to replicate a Glock-style handgun,” Montgomery continued; adding that neither men were wearing seatbelts when the collision occurred.

The victim killed in the collision has since been positively identified as 19-year-old, Jimmie Junior Adkison II, of Redding, according to Shasta County Chief Deputy Coroner Lieutenant Stonehouse.

The driver of the Buick, Cassandra Petty, 31, suffered minor injuries, according to Montgomery.

During Redding PD’s subsequent investigation, Petty and other witnesses told investigating officers the 4-Runner was traveling northbound on Lake Boulevard when Maughs failed to slow down or stop for a red light and slammed into the Buick as Petty was making a left-hand turn with a green light.

The impact caused the 4-Runner to overturn where it then smashed into a concrete light pole.

Based on their investigation, officers determined Maughs was driving under the influence of drugs and he was arrested for DUI causing injuries. Due to his extensive injuries he was released to the hospital, where he is continuing to receive further treatment.

Redding PD’s investigation is ongoing.
