DUI driver arrested after fleeing fiery Temecula wreck

TEMECULA, Calif. — Saying, “Luckily, No one was injured,” officials say a man who had a blood alcohol content of more than twice the legal limit was arrested after trying to flee the scene of a fiery, solo-vehicle wreck early Saturday morning, Dec. 19.

The crash happened on the southernmost end of Old Town Temecula, near the intersection of Old Town Front and First streets.

City of Temecula deputies and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the accident around 2 a.m., after receiving reports of a vehicle that had crashed into one of the concrete stanchions that hold the large “Old Town Temecula” sign.

Callers reported the driver fled from the vehicle on foot, just as it burst into flames.

“So, ever wondered what double the legal limit blood alcohol level looks like?”, officials later wrote in a social media post with a photo taken from the scene of the fiery crash. “Here it is,” officials continued; adding, “Please don’t drink and drive. You could save yours or another persons life.” RSO/Temecula Police Department photo

Quick responding deputies and firefighters arrived within minutes and found a white SUV fully engulfed in flames and burning across both lanes of Old Town Front Street.

Although officials did not say how fast the vehicle had been going at the time of the accident, evidence at the scene indicated the SUV had struck the stanchion at a significant rate of speed, causing the vehicle to spin, leaving it facing the opposite direction. The impact sent vehicle parts and debris scattered throughout the roadway and the burning vehicle was left blocking both lanes of travel.

While firefighters extinguished the blaze, deputies located and detained the driver, since identified as 23-year-old, Gustavo Adrian Saucedo. While interviewing Saucedo, deputies determined he was intoxicated and arrested him at the scene.

Saucedo was later booked into Cois Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta on suspicion of driving while under the influence and hit and run. Online jail records indicate he was released with a citation within hours of being booked and is scheduled to be arraigned at Murrieta Southwest Justice Center Feb. 9.
