California Highway Patrol, Caltrans, and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene between Bella Vista and Montgomery Creek near MM 46.00 around 1 p.m., after receiving reports of the solo-vehicle accident, according to a CHP incident log and official radio traffic at the time.

The 911 caller reported that two occupants had managed to exit the wrecked truck, which they told emergency dispatchers had gone down the east-side embankment of the highway. The caller also reported that the truck was “buried in the trees” about 800 feet west of Oak Run Road and said, “all you can see is the tail-end of it.”

First arriving officials found a full-size, four-door Toyota Tundra down the embankment and reported the impact had sheered an 18-inch alder tree, which had come crashing down on top of the pickup truck.

Officials also determined the two occupants from the truck were not seriously injured and did not require medical treatment, at which time medical personnel were canceled from responding.

At around 3:20 p.m., CHP initiated one-way traffic control to allow for the truck to be pulled from the embankment. However, the recovery efforts were hampered by the tree that had been knocked down on top of the truck, and officials were forced to use chainsaws to cut the tree away from the vehicle so it could be pulled back up to the roadway.

The one-way traffic control continued for about an hour until the truck was recovered and towed away from the scene.

Contacted for further information, a CHP representative said officers were continuing to investigate the cause of the crash and that no further details were immediately available.
