RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Authorities say two officers were injured and one was hospitalized after an officer-involved shooting in Riverside that critically injured a suspect who officials say intentionally rammed his car into the officers late Sunday evening, March 7.

The shooting happened in a shopping center in the 1700 block of University Avenue, according to officials.

Two City of Riverside police officers were patrolling the business complex shortly before midnight when they spotted a black vehicle occupied by two men parked in the rear area of the shopping center’s parking lot, Riverside PD officials have since said of the late-night shooting.

“As they approached and were contacting the two men, the driver put the vehicle in reverse, striking both officers,” RPD explained; adding, “An officer-involved shooting then occurred.”

Apparently struck by the officers’ gunfire, the driver momentarily stopped before he “then sped the vehicle forward where it collided into a parked car,” officials described.

Although the passenger immediately surrendered to officers, the critically injured driver was not taken into custody until additional assisting officers arrived at the scene.

“The passenger sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment,” RPD explained. “The driver sustained gunshot wounds and was also transported to a local hospital in critical condition.”

Both officers who were struck and injured by the suspect when he rammed into them were treated at the scene before one was transported to an area hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Both are expected to survive their injuries.

Investigators with the Riverside County District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation responded to the scene and have assumed the investigation. They are being assisted by detectives with the Riverside Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Unit, along with specialists from the department’s Forensics Unit.
