HEMET, Calif., — Authorities today announced the arrest of a man suspected of shooting two women in Hemet Sunday evening, Aug. 16. One of the women passed away at the scene and the other remains hospitalized in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, according to officials; who said they have still not positively confirmed the identity of the surviving woman.
Officials have said the shooting was the result of a “previous disagreement” between suspect, since identified as Brian Kevin Kumpe, 38, of Hemet, and at least one of the two women. The argument ultimately resulted in Kumpe shooting the victims when the three crossed paths in the 400 block of N. Elk Street Sunday night.

As their investigation continued, City of Hemet police detectives worked throughout the night and Monday morning, gathering information and developing leads that led them to identifying Kumpe as the shooter “in this tragic and senseless incident,” Hemet Police Lieutenant Nate Miller said after Kumpe’s arrest.
The dark-colored Chevrolet Tahoe SUV Kumpe was believed to have been driving when he pulled alongside the victims and opened fire on them as they sat inside their vehicle was also located and seized and is being processed by crime scene technicians for evidence.

At about 4:40 p.m., investigators located and arrested Kumpe in San Jacinto and he was later booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on suspicion of first-degree murder with a firearm, attempted murder with a firearm, and other related charges.
Online jail records indicate he remains in custody where he is being held without bail.
“The identity of the deceased victim is not being released pending family notification,” Miller said today; adding, “Due to the serious injuries of the second victim, investigators have not yet been able to positively confirm her identity, but hope to speak with her more as her condition improves.”

Original Story: Hemet shooting leaves one woman dead, another critically injured
HEMET, Calif., — Authorities say one woman was killed and another is in critical condition after a shooting in Hemet Sunday evening, Aug. 15. The deadly shooting happened in the 400 block of N. Elk Street, between Oakland and Rosalia avenues, according to officials.
Although no arrests have been made and investigators have not yet determined a motive for the fatal incident, officials have said the shooting did not appear to be “random or accidental” and investigators are continuing to search for the shooter(s).
City of Hemet emergency dispatchers were notified about the shooting around 9:30 p.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting that had just occurred, Hemet PD Lieutenant Nate Miller has since reported. At the same time, two Hemet police officers who were on a call a couple blocks away also heard the gunshots and officers raced to the scene.
When officials arrived they found a silver sedan stopped diagonally in the middle of the roadway with two women suffering from gunshot wounds.

Despite life-saving efforts, one of the women succumbed to her injuries and passed away at the scene. The other woman was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition.
Neither of the victims’ names have been released and a Coroner’s release this morning indicated that the deceased woman’s name was being withheld at the request of Hemet PD.
“Witnesses told officers that the two women were in a silver car when a dark colored vehicle pulled up alongside of it,” Miller explained. “Several shots were fired at the two women and then the dark colored vehicle sped away.”
During their subsequent initial on-scene investigation, officials located and recovered several bullet casings in the roadway near where the shooting occurred; however, they did not locate or recover the weapon used in the fatal shooting according to the Lieutenant; who said the shooter(s) had fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival at the scene.
“The suspect’s vehicle has not yet been located and no one is in custody as of this release,” Miller explained; saying, “While detectives have not yet determined a motive, investigators do not believe the shooting is random or accidental.”
