Woman arrested after fatally stabbing elderly man at Shasta Lake boat launch

CITY OF SHASTA LAKE, Calif., — Authorities today said a woman was arrested after the fatal stabbing of a man near Lake Shasta’s Centimudi boat launch Sunday morning, Aug. 15.

The man and woman involved in the deadly encounter were acquaintances who had gone to the lake together that morning, according to officials; who have said the couple began arguing while at the boat launch, leading to the fatal stabbing.

Deputies assigned to the Shasta County Sheriff’s South County Patrol Station and City of Shasta Lake Patrol Station were dispatched to the boat launch shortly before 10:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a stabbing that had just occurred, Shasta County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit Sergeant Kyle Wallace has since reported.

When deputies arrived in the area they first spotted and detained 48-year-old, Janet Paulene Wilson, from the City of Shasta Lake, as she walked away from the boat launch area with blood soaked clothing.

They next discovered the victim, 70-year-old, Phillip Thomas Ramsell, also from the City of Shasta Lake. Responding officers located him near the boat launch suffering from multiple stab wounds, according to Wallace.

Despite life-saving efforts by medical personnel, Ramsell succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the scene.

Members of the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit were contacted and ultimately took over the investigation.

During their subsequent investigation, MCU detectives learned Ramsell and Wilson knew each other and had gone to the lake together that morning according to Wallace.

“For unknown reason(s) an altercation occurred between them” and that altercation resulted in Wilson repeatedly stabbing Ramsell, killing him, the Sergeant explained.

Based on their investigation, officials arrested Wilson and she was later booked into the Shasta County Jail in Redding on suspicion of first-degree murder. Online jail records indicate she remains in custody in lieu of $1 million bail or bond.

No further details about the circumstances or motive regarding this investigation have been released.
