Eastvale man, 69, fatally struck while riding motorized bicycle in Jurupa Valley

JURUPA VALLEY, Calif., — Authorities say the elderly rider of a motorized bicycle was fatally struck after making an abrupt U-Turn directly in front of an oncoming pickup truck in Jurupa Valley Sunday morning, Aug. 15. The fatal accident happened near the intersection of Limonite Avenue and Etiwanda Avenue and forced the hours-long closure of the roadway between Etiwanda and Wineville avenues.

Deputies from the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene around 10:21 a.m. after receiving reports of a major injury collision involving an elderly man who was struck while operating a motorized bicycle, Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant Lemsisanith has since reported.

When officials arrived they found the bike rider down in the roadway. His black motorized bicycle and a black 2019 Chevrolet Silverado and its driver were found nearby.

“The rider of the motorized bicycle was found to have major injuries and Cal Fire/Rescue personnel attempted life-saving measures,” Lemsisanith explained; adding that despite life-saving efforts the bicyclist succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the scene.

Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner officials later identified Jeffrey Bowen, 69, of Eastvale, as the man killed in the collision. A coroner’s release indicated he was pronounced deceased by paramedics at 10:27 a.m.

Members of the Jurupa Valley Station’s Traffic Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the location and assumed the investigation. The driver of the Chevrolet was not injured in the accident and remained at the scene. He cooperated with the investigation, was interviewed and was later released.

“Preliminary investigation indicated the bicyclist was traveling westbound on Limonite Avenue and made an abrupt U-turn and collided with the black Chevrolet Silverado, which was also traveling westbound on Limonite Avenue,” described Lemsisanith.

It remains unknown if alcohol and/or drug intoxication were contributing factors on the part of the victim killed in the collision.

Both directions of Limonite Avenue between Etiwanda and Wineville avenues were closed for the duration of the investigation and later re-opened.
