Double DUI crash sends truck careening into pedestrian – Both drivers arrested, victim critical

RIVERSIDE, Calif., — Authorities say both drivers involved in a major injury vehicle collision were arrested after a crash that sent one of the involved vehicles careening into a pedestrian early Tuesday morning, Sept. 28.

Neither of the allegedly impaired drivers was injured in the collision, which happened at the intersection of Van Buren Boulevard and Challen Avenue.

City of Riverside police and fire personnel were dispatched to the area shortly after midnight after the City’s Public Safety Communications Center received calls of an injury traffic collision involving at least two vehicles and a pedestrian, Riverside PD has since said of the accident and arrests.

Although neither driver sustained injuries as a result of the collision, the pedestrian suffered major injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition.

During their preliminary investigation, Traffic Team members determined that just before the crash William Joseph Gray Jr., 47, of Riverside, was driving a gray Chevy Colorado southbound on Van Buren Boulevard approaching Challen Avenue.

At the same time, Carl Dean Wilson III, 20, also of Riverside, was driving a white Toyota Corolla northbound on Van Buren Boulevard and was making a left-hand turn onto Challen Avenue on a green signal arrow.

“The Chevy continued into the intersection on a red signal light and collided with the Toyota,” explained department officials. “The collision caused the Chevy to leave the roadway where it then struck a male pedestrian walking on the west sidewalk.”

During the investigation, officers determined both Gray and Wilson were under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and officers arrested both men at the scene.

Online jail records indicate both men have since been released from custody, with Wilson being cited and released and Gray posting $50,000 bail or bond.

Anyone with information regarding this collision is urged to call Riverside Police Traffic Detective G. Matthews at (951) 826-8724 or [email protected].
