Sacramento pedestrian, 61, dies after struck by vehicle in Cathedral City

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif., — Authorities say a Sacramento man was killed when he was struck by a vehicle in Cathedral City Sunday evening, Nov. 7. The deadly accident happened on East Palm Canyon Drive, just east of Cree Road, according to officials.

Cathedral City police and fire personnel were dispatched to the scene shortly after 7:30 p.m. after receiving reports of the accident.

When officials arrived they found a man down in the westbound lanes of East Palm Canyon with critical, life-threatening injuries. Despite life-saving efforts, the victim succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the scene.

The Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office has since identified Joseph Gonzalez-Lederer, 61, of Sacramento, as the pedestrian killed in the collision. A Coroner’s release indicated he was pronounced deceased at 7:46 p.m.

Members of Cathedral City PD’s Traffic Team are investigating the collision and it is not yet known if drug or alcohol intoxication were contributing factors.

While officials worked at the scene they called for the temporary closure of both directions of East Palm Canyon, between Canyon Plaza and Golf Club. The roadway has since been reopened.

No other injuries were reported as a result of the accident.

Trevor’s assignments included Corrections, Patrol, DUI Enforcement, Boat and Personal Water-Craft based Lake Patrol, Off-Road Vehicle Enforcement, Problem Oriented Policing Team, and Personnel/Background Investigations. He finished his career while working as a Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Investigator and was a court-designated expert in child abuse and child sex-related crimes.

Trevor has been married for more than 30 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and his “fluid family” includes 13 children and 18 grandchildren.
