City of Riverside police and fire personnel were dispatched to the scene around 5:50 p.m. after receiving reports of a hit and run traffic collision involving a pedestrian, Riverside PD has since reported.

When officials arrived at the scene they found an adult male in the roadway with major traumatic injuries. The victim was treated at the scene before being rushed to Riverside Community Hospital with critical injuries. Despite life-saving measures, the victim succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

The Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office today identified Riley Froom, 67, of Riverside, as the victim killed in the collision. A Coroner’s release indicated he was pronounced deceased at 6:34 p.m.

Members of Riverside PD’s Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

MAIT’s preliminary findings indicate that Froom had entered the roadway from the north-curb of Indiana Avenue and was crossing the roadway when he was struck by a vehicle traveling east on Indiana Avenue, according to officials; who added, “Based on witness statements, the pedestrian was outside the crosswalk at the time of the collision.”

The driver of the vehicle, which officials have not yet provided any description of, failed to stop or render aid to the mortally injured victim and fled the scene.

MAIT officers are continuing to search for information about the hit and run driver and have said that at this time, it is unknown if drugs and/or alcohol intoxication were contributing factors in the fatal collision.

Anyone with information regarding this accident or who knows the identity and/or whereabouts of the driver who fled the scene is urged to contact Riverside Police Department Traffic Detective Ryan Mchugh at (951) 826-8720 or by email.
