Multi-agency stolen vehicle pursuit and search ends with arrest of Anderson man

REDDING, Calif., — Authorities say an Anderson man was arrested at the end of a dangerous high-speed pursuit of a stolen pickup truck pulling a flat-bed trailer that began in Redding and ended in Cottonwood early Saturday morning, Jan. 22.

Multiple law enforcement agencies participated in or assisted with the pursuit and subsequent search for the suspect, who abandoned his stolen vehicle after officials successfully deployed spike strips and flattened several of the truck’s tires, according to Redding Police Department.

City of Redding police officers were patrolling the area of Canyon Road near Redding Rancheria Road shortly before 1 a.m. when they spotted a stolen Ford F-250 pickup truck towing an unregistered flatbed trailer, Redding Police Corporal Ferrin later said of the incident and arrest.

When officers attempted to conduct an enforcement stop, the driver immediately fled at high speed southbound into Happy Valley, according to Ferrin. As the pickup was fleeing, the truck’s flatbed trailer detached from the pickup and careened off the roadway and into a field, where it smashed into a fence.

With officers and deputies from Redding and Anderson, along with CHP and the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, converging on the area to assist in the ongoing chase, deputies were able to position themselves ahead of the oncoming pursuit and successfully deployed an intervention technique to puncture the vehicle’s tires.

Despite several of the pickup’s tires being flattened, the truck continued into the Cottonwood area where the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot from the area.

Officials quickly found the abandoned vehicle and during a subsequent search of the area located 29-year-old, Kody Carter, of Anderson, hiding in a nearby ditch where he was arrested without further incident.

Carter was later booked into the Shasta County Jail in Redding on suspicion of vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, felony evading, and driving with a suspended license.

Online jail records indicate he remains in custody in lieu of $50,000 bail or bond.
