Shotgun-wielding Redding woman arrested after shooting at vehicle occupied by husband, 2 children

REDDING, Calif., — Authorities say a Redding woman was arrested after a domestic dispute spiraled out of control, resulting in the woman allegedly firing a shotgun blast through the window of a vehicle occupied by her husband and his two young children early this morning, Saturday, March 12.

According to official accounts, the husband was attempting to diffuse the volatile situation by leaving the scene with his kids when the alleged suspect opened fire on his vehicle as he was trying to back away from the couple’s home in the 2000 block of Glengary Drive.

Although it was initially reported that the couple did not reside together and that the shooting may have happened during a child custody exchange, officials have since reported that the suspect lives at the Glengary residence with her husband and his children.

City of Redding police officers were dispatched to the scene at 1:15 a.m. after receiving reports of a woman who had just discharged a firearm, Redding Police Sergeant Jon Sheldon has since reported.

Responding officers were confronted outside the home by 43-year-old Mindy Jo Garduno. Although the shotgun-wielding woman was initially cooperative, radio traffic at the time indicated she soon became “non-compliant”, at which time additional resources, including an armored tactical rescue vehicle, were requested to the scene.

A short time later, officers were able to negotiate with Garduno “to safely take her into custody,” according to Sheldon.

During their subsequent investigation, officers learned that during the early morning hours, Garduno and her husband began arguing.

“The argument escalated to the point where the two fought over a shotgun,” Sheldon explained.

In an attempt to diffuse the situation, the husband, whose name was not released, put his two children in his car and began backing out of the driveway at which time Garduno came out of the home while armed with the shotgun, Sheldon continued.

She then fired one round, striking the driver side windshield of the vehicle.

None of the three occupants of the vehicle were injured in the shooting and Garduno later admitted to having fired the shotgun at the vehicle, according to Sheldon.
