Weeks-old “minor dispute” leads to Redding shooting – Gunman arrested

REDDING, Calif., — Authorities say a “minor dispute” that happened between two men at a party several weeks ago led to one of the men following and then shooting at the other man as they were driving in separate vehicles on Tuesday evening, April 5.

Although the targeted victim was uninjured by the gunfire, his vehicle was struck by several of the fired rounds, according to Redding Police Sergeant Sheldon, who has since said that although “this shooting occurred in a heavily populated area; thankfully, no one was injured.”

City of Redding police officers were alerted to last Tuesday night’s shooting around 10:20 p.m. after Jayden Peterson, 20, of Redding, reported that a man had just fired multiple rounds at him from another vehicle while they were driving in the 3100 block of Bechelli Lane, between Hartnell Avenue and Loma Vista Drive.

Officers who responded to the scene determined Peterson was not struck by the gunfire but found that his vehicle was hit by several of the rounds fired by the suspect, since identified by the victim as 28-year-old Brandon Culver.

According to the victim, he had finished a shift at work and was driving home when he realized he was being followed by another vehicle, Sheldon explained.

After making a U-Turn to see who was following him, the victim immediately recognized Culver from their previous dispute weeks earlier.

As the two vehicles passed each other in opposite directions, the victim heard the sound of gunfire followed by the sound of bullets striking his vehicle.

“After the shooting, Culver fled the scene,” explained Sheldon, adding, “Peterson escaped injury, but his vehicle was struck by several bullets.”

Based on the information provided by the victim, Redding officers issued a radio broadcast for other area law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for Culver’s vehicle.

A short time later, officers investigating the shooting learned that Tehama County sheriff’s deputies had located Culver driving his vehicle in the Red Bluff area and detained him without incident.

After locating and recovering a firearm in Culver’s vehicle, officers arrested him, and he was later booked into the Shasta County Jail in Redding on suspicion of attempted murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. He remains in custody in lieu of $500,000 bail or bond.
