PALM SPRINGS: Pedestrian seriously injured after being struck by car

PALM SPRINGS – A pedestrian sustained serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle Tuesday Jan. 2. The vehicle versus pedestrian accident happened at the intersection of S. Sunrise Way and E. San Rafael Drive in Palm Springs.

Palm Springs police and fire personnel were dispatched to the intersection after several citizens called 911 to report the injury traffic collision about 6:02 p.m.

Firefighter/paramedics treated the pedestrian at the scene before AMR medics transported the victim to a local hospital with major injuries.

The Palm Springs Major Accident Investigation Unit was summoned to the scene and assumed the accident investigation.

During their preliminary investigation officers determined a vehicle was traveling northbound on S. Sunrise Way when it struck the pedestrian, who was walking westbound on E. San Rafael Drive at the lighted intersection. It was not immediately known if the pedestrian was crossing the intersection within the marked cross walk at the intersection.

Neither the pedestrian nor the driver were identified by officials.

Traffic at the intersection was temporarily diverted while officials investigated the cause of the accident. The roadway was reopened about two hours later, shortly after 8 p.m.

“At this time in the investigation it is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor,” an official wrote in a press release after the accident.

There was no further information regarding the extent of the victim’s injuries and the investigation is ongoing, according to officials.

Anyone with information about the incident or who saw the accident is encouraged to contact Palm Springs police officials at (760) 323-8116. Callers can remain anonymous.
