Hemet PD officers responded to the neighborhood about 7 p.m., after receiving reports of a Hispanic male causing a disturbance at his residence. According to a 911 caller, the male was threatening to stab his father with a pocketknife. It was not immediately known if the alleged suspect was a juvenile or adult.

While officers were headed to the home the alleged suspect reportedly walked away from the residence while still armed with the knife.

Responding officers located the person walking in the neighborhood on Cambridge Avenue, near his father’s residence. When officials attempted to contact the person, they saw he was still armed with the pocketknife. Official radio traffic at the time indicated the subject was holding the pocketknife, which was open and ready.

Despite officer’s orders, the person refused to drop the knife he was holding and was uncooperative with officials. According to witnesses at the scene, the alleged suspect yelled at officers, “I just wanted to cut myself.”

Based on the circumstances, officials at the scene requested additional officers and resources, including less-lethal options such as a pepper-ball rifle and bean bag shotgun.

Officials eventually managed to convince the person to drop the knife at which time he was detained for further investigation. He was taken into custody without further incident.

It was not immediately known if the person was arrested or taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation and no further details were available.
