CORONA: Woman injured after car careens down embankment, crashes into ditch

CORONA — A woman was hospitalized after her car careened off a freeway, went down an embankment and crashed into a ravine, Sunday night, Feb. 25. The solo-vehicle crash happened along southbound I-15, between Magnolia and Ontario Avenues, in Corona.

California Highway Patrol, City of Corona Fire Department and AMR were dispatched to the scene after callers reported the wreck. When they arrived, officials located a light-colored Mercedes-Benz C300 in a concrete drainage ditch, south of Magnolia Avenue, down an embankment, about 100 feet from where it left the freeway.

The sedan had moderate front and passenger side damage and a bloodied woman was still sitting inside the car. The woman sustained unspecified, moderate injuries and due to the sloped freeway embankment firefighters set up to conduct a technical hoist rescue.

Firefighters successfully hoisted the victim up to the side of the freeway shortly after 6 p.m., where she was evaluated and treated by paramedics. AMR medics then transported the woman to an area hospital in stable condition.

While firefighters and medical personnel worked with the victim, CHP investigated the cause of the crash. During the rescue and investigation, southbound traffic backed up for several miles and northbound traffic became congested as well, frustrating countless rush-hour commuters.

CHP’s investigation is ongoing.
