RIVERSIDE: Elk’s Lodge shooting leaves woman dead, man critically injured

RIVERSIDE — A shooting during a family event last night in Riverside left a woman dead and a man in critical condition. The fatal incident happened at an Elk’s Lodge at 6166 Brockton Ave.

A man who officials allege shot the pair was later apprehended after being involved in a hit and run traffic collision about two and a half miles from the scene of the deadly shooting.

Abraham David Bonilla, 37, was booked into Robert Presley Detention Center early this morning on suspicion of murder, attempted murder, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Jail records indicate he remains in custody and is being held without bail.

Emergency first responders were dispatched to the Elk’s Lodge shortly after 7 p.m., after the Riverside Police and Fire Dispatch Center received several calls regarding a fight and shooting that had just occurred.

When officials arrived they found a large group who had been using the lodge for a private function while celebrating a family event, Riverside PD officials explained in a social media release after the fatal incident.

“While Officers were conducting their preliminary investigation at the scene, a Hispanic female adult arrived at Riverside Community Hospital with gunshot wounds,” officials explained. “Shortly thereafter, a Hispanic male adult arrived at Riverside Community Hospital and he too was suffering from gunshot wounds.”

Both shooting victims immediately underwent emergency surgery, but despite life-saving efforts the woman later died from her injuries. The male victim is currently listed in critical condition.

Within minutes of the original shooting call, officials received multiple reports of a hit and run collision involving a vehicle that crashed into a fire hydrant in the area of Jurupa Avenue and Fremont Street. Callers advised that after the crash, a Hispanic male adult immediately fled the scene on foot and was last seen running into a nearby residential neighborhood.

Officers responded to the area and quickly located and detained the alleged hit and run driver on Mountain View Ave. The man was later identified as Bonilla.

As their investigation was continuing, officers determined Bonilla had been involved in the shooting at the Elks Lodge and arrested him without incident.

Jail records indicate Bonilla was arrested at 7:24 p.m., just 20 minutes after the deadly shooting occurred.

“Detectives from the Robbery – Homicide Unit, Gang Intelligence Unit, and Specialists from the Forensics Unit responded to assume the investigation,” said officials. “They are being assisted by the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office and the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner.”

Officials have not released the deceased woman’s name, pending further investigation.

Officials have also not released any details regarding Bonilla’s motive for the shooting and have not specified how or if the victims were related.

Riverside PD’s investigation is active and ongoing.
