CHP and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene of the accident at 9:52 p.m., when a woman called 911 and reported that her mirror had struck a man who had been walking along the side of the highway near Canyon Rd. The caller told SHASCOM emergency dispatchers the impact knocked the mirror off her vehicle, according to CHP’s log.

Within minutes, another caller reported that vehicles had begun to stack up behind the scene of the crash, creating a traffic jam that quickly stretched more than a mile.

When the first officer arrived at the scene they reported finding a man down in the number 3 lane of traffic. At 10:05 p.m., the officer updated that the victim had already succumbed to his injuries and was deceased at the scene.

Officers quickly called for the temporary closure of the highway and requested coroner officials to the scene.

All southbound traffic on 273, south of Canyon Rd. remains closed and officials have not specified when the highway is expected to be re-opened to traffic.

CHP has not yet released any information regarding this accident and their investigation is ongoing.
