CHP and other emergency personnel were first alerted to the crash around 5:20 p.m., when they received a report of the crash. A 911 caller reported that a dark-colored SUV, described as a Chevy Trailblazer, ran off the roadway and ended up in the trees in a gully along the north side of the winding, two-lane mountain roadway.

According to a CHP incident log, the female victim of the crash was reportedly “shaken up” but was otherwise uninjured in the crash.

Several witnesses and good Samaritans who stopped at the scene to offer help to the stranded motorist later told SCNS the victim’s husband, who was possibly driving behind the victim when the crash happened or rushed to the scene after hearing about the accident, was already at the scene and attempting to drive the SUV up and out of the gully where it came to rest.

Subsequent 911 callers reported heavy hail in the area, with one to two inches of ice on the highway, which was making recovery efforts difficult. CHP’s incident log later updated that chain control signs had been activated for the area, due to worsening weather conditions.

Although a tow truck was summoned to the scene to assist, it was later cancelled. It was not immediately known if the vehicle’s owner managed drive the SUV out of the gully or if someone else assisted in recovering the vehicle from down the embankment.

Contacted for further information about the crash, CHP could not provide any further details.
