Traffic deputies assigned to Rancho Mirage Police Department, along with Cal Fire/Riverside County firefighters, AMR, and other emergency personnel responded to the area shortly after 1 p.m., after receiving reports of the accident, Riverside Sheriff’s Sgt. Randy Vasquez later reported.

During their subsequent collision investigation, deputies determined the rider of the scooter was traveling eastbound on Hwy 111 “when she turned left onto Library Way against a red signal,” according to Vasquez.

“The scooter was struck by a Nissan minivan, causing the rider to be thrown off the scooter,” Vasquez explained. “The scooter was then struck a second time by a Toyota SUV.”

The woman riding the scooter, who Vasquez said was wearing a helmet when the crash occurred, suffered “severe, but non-life-threatening injuries.” She was rushed by ground ambulance to an area hospital where she was later listed in stable condition.

Alcohol and drug intoxication were not considered contributing factors in the collision.

The other motorists involved in the crash remained at the scene and were cooperating with traffic officers and their investigation, which is ongoing.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has further information is encouraged to contact Deputy Bazanos of the Rancho Mirage Police Department’s Traffic Team at (760) 836-1600. Callers can refer to incident file number S190920030 and can remain anonymous.
