Deputies from the San Jacinto Sheriff’s Station, Cal Fire, and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene shortly before 4:30 a.m., after receiving reports of a vehicle that struck a pedestrian, Riverside Sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Heath later reported.

Deputies arrived at the scene within minutes of the dispatched call and found a woman down in the roadway suffering from major injuries.

Deputies also located the vehicle that struck the victim, along with its driver, who remained at the scene and was cooperating with the sheriff’s investigation.

Firefighter/Paramedics arrived moments later and began lifesaving efforts; however the victim succumbed to her injuries and she passed away at the scene, according to Heath.

Officials have since identified 25-year-old, Holly Rood as the victim killed in the collision. A coroner’s release indicated Rood, whose hometown was unknown at the time, was pronounced deceased at 4:44 a.m.

Based on the circumstances members of the San Jacinto Sheriff Station’s Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

“The preliminary investigation revealed a red Hyundai Elantra was traveling southbound on De Anza Dr. when it struck a pedestrian walking in the middle of the roadway,” described Heath; who added, “The driver of the vehicle immediately pulled over and call 9-1-1.”

While officials worked at the scene the intersection of De Anza Dr. at Main St. was closed to traffic. The roadway was reopened around 8 a.m.
