Boy, 13, drowns at Shasta Lake’s Centimudi Boat Ramp

SHASTA LAKE, Calif. — Authorities say a 13-year-old boy drowned near the Centimudi Boat Ramp at Shasta Lake last night, Tuesday, July 7.

The young victim’s death was the second drowning to occur at or near Shasta Lake’s Centimudi Boat Ramp after a man drowned when a boat he was in sank after a morning of fishing, Saturday, July 4.

Shasta County sheriff’s deputies and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the boat ramp shortly after 10 p.m., after SHASCOM emergency dispatchers received a 911 call reporting a missing child and possible drowning, Shasta County Sheriff’s Sgt. Garet Baldwin has since said of last night’s deadly incident.

The 911 caller, a security officer from the Shasta Dam Security office told dispatchers the 13-year-old’s grandfather, Hosie Rouse, 49, of Shasta Lake City, had reported the child as missing and asked the security guard to call 911 and ask for help searching for the missing boy.

When officials arrived they immediately began searching the area of the boat ramp.

“The victim was located minutes later near the boat dock, under approximately ten feet of water,” explained Baldwin. “The victim was quickly removed from the water and CPR and life saving measures were started.”

With paramedics continuing CPR, the teen was rushed to Mercy Medical Center, where he later passed away and was pronounced deceased by medical personnel.

During their subsequent investigation, Rouse told deputies he arrived at the ramp around 8:30 p.m., with his three grandsons, ages 13, 7, and 6, according to Baldwin; who said the trio were visiting from the Stockton area.

“Rouse’s grandsons were playing in the water next to the boat dock and other juveniles and adults were visiting the area and playing in the water as well,” said Baldwin.

“Rouse walked away from the ramp for a few minutes to talk to another adult who was fishing on the banks of the lake, while the juveniles continued to horseplay in the water,” the Sgt. continued.

A short time later, witnesses in the area reported hearing the 13-year-old victim crying out for help, at which time Rouse realized he could not locate his grandson.

Rouse, along with other adults and juveniles in the area, began a frantic search for the victim in the dark water around the boat dock where the boy had last been seen.

When they could not locate the child after several minutes of searching, they called 911, according to Baldwin; who said the victim’s name has not yet been released to the public.

According to the Sheriff’s Boating Safety Unit, although the juvenile was not wearing a life jacket and was not required to due to not being on a boat, they used the opportunity to remind people recreating on or near the water “to wear life jackets, stay hydrated, and pay close attention to juveniles when they are in or around water.”

This is a developing story that will be updated as new information becomes available.
