Riverside DUI crash injures two officers, five others

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Officials say an intoxicated driver ran a red light and crashed into two vehicles, including an on-duty Riverside Police Department patrol vehicle and mini-van, Thursday evening, Aug. 27. According to authorities, the driver who caused the collision was more than three times the legal limit when he crashed into the other vehicles.

Two officers from the patrol SUV and a mother with three children from the van sustained minor injuries in the crash, which happened at the intersection of La Sierra and Campbell avenues. All six victims, as well as the suspected drunk driver, were treated at area hospitals for minor injuries, according to authorities who later arrested the driver who caused the collision.

At around 8 p.m., two Riverside police officers were responding to a call for service when a white Dodge Ram pickup truck towing a concrete pumper failed to stop for a red light at the intersection and crashed into a white van. The impact pushed the van into the patrol vehicle and all three vehicles came to rest within the intersection.

The officers were treated at a local medical facility for minor injuries and the mother and three children were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, according to officials.

During their subsequent investigation, officers determined the driver who caused the crash, Alfredo Morales, 36, of Ontario, was under the influence of alcohol; after a preliminary screening indicated he was three times above the legal limit of .o8% BAC.

After receiving medical treatment at a local hospital Morales was booked into Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on suspicion of felony DUI causing injuries.

Online jail records indicate Morales was released within hours of being booked after posting $50,000 bail or bond and he is scheduled to be arraigned at the Riverside Hall of Justice Dec. 29.
