HOMELAND, Calif. — Authorities this morning released additional information regarding a deadly deputy-involved shooting that happened in the unincorporated community of Homeland last night, Tuesday, Jan. 26. The fatal encounter occurred at a private residence in the 26000 block of Steinhoff Avenue, between Highway 74 and Joppe Avenue, according to officials.
Tuesday’s shooting was the first of two deputy-involved shootings involving estranged spouses within a four-day period. The second shooting happened Friday afternoon after a frantic and terrified woman ran into a Thousand Palms business and reported that her estranged husband was armed with a rifle and trying to kill her. The man later led deputies and CHP officers on a pursuit that traveled to La Quinta, where he was fatally shot after crashing his pickup truck.

Deputies assigned to the Perris Sheriff’s Station responded to the home at 6:36 p.m., after receiving reports of a disturbance, Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant Lionel Murphy has since said of the fatal encounter.
While headed to the scene, deputies received updated information that the 911 caller’s estranged husband was armed with a handgun and was making threats to kill her. She also told emergency dispatchers that she was inside her residence with her two children.

“When deputies arrived, the suspect fired a handgun at them,” Murphy reported; adding, “At that time, a deputy-involved shooting occurred …and… the suspect was struck by the deputy’s gunfire.”
Despite life-saving efforts by paramedics and deputies, the gunman succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the scene. His identity has not yet been released and is being withheld at this time, according to Murphy.
After the deadly shooting, investigators from the Perris Sheriff’s Station and Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit responded to the scene, along with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Force Investigations Detail. An Investigator from the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office will be leading the shooting investigation.

During their initial, on-scene investigation, a firearm, spent shell casings, and other evidence related to the deadly encounter were recovered at the scene.
The involved deputies were placed on administrative leave per Department policy and their names were not released.
“There are no outstanding suspects and there is no danger to the public,” said Murphy; adding that no deputies or other citizens were injured as a result of the shooting, which remains under investigation.

HOMELAND, Calif. — Authorities this evening confirmed that a deputy-involved shooting occurred earlier tonight in the 26000 block of Steinhoff Avenue in the unincorporated area of Homeland.
While releasing very few details regarding the Monday, Jan. 26th shooting, a Riverside County Sheriff’s representative said the alleged suspect was killed and that no deputies or other community members were injured during the incident.
Officials have asked citizens to avoid the area and said their investigation is active and ongoing at the scene.
