No injuries after plane crashes, ends up on its roof, in Thermal
THERMAL, Calif. — A pilot escaped injury when a single-engine airplane crashed and flipped onto its roof while landing at the Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport in Thermal Friday afternoon, Feb. 5, according to fire and sheriff’s officials. Previously known as the Thermal Airport, the Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport is a public-use airport owned by Riverside County.
Friday’s crash was the second aircraft emergency in Riverside County within 24 hours, after a plane suffered a “hard landing” when its pilot reported engine failure while taking off from Flabob Airport in Jurupa Valley Thursday afternoon. The plane clipped two cars and ended up nose down after the pilot attempted to land on Crestmore Road just outside two parks that sit adjacent to the airport.

Cal Fire-Riverside firefighters and Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the scene around 12:30 p.m. after receiving reports of an aircraft emergency, Cal Fire said in a social media release.
When officials arrived they found a Jabiru J230 light-sport aircraft that had flipped over and landed on its roof. The uninjured pilot had already self-extricated from the overturned aircraft prior to the arrival of emergency personnel.
Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Arlene Salac later said the pilot was the only person on board when the mishap occurred.

Reports from the scene indicated the pilot encountered issues while landing due to weather conditions.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board later responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.
