Deputies assigned to the San Jacinto Sheriff Station initiated a vehicle pursuit on a suspected impaired driver around 7:49 a.m., Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant Brad Farwell said after the incident and arrests.

Despite the deputies’ lights and sirens the driver, later identified as Taniah Elizabeth Cardenas, 28, of San Jacinto, accelerated away in an attempt to elude them.

During the chase, Cardenas drove in an extremely reckless manner, without regard for the safety of other citizens or pursuing deputies, and was seen running stop signs and driving into oncoming traffic, according to Farwell.

Cardenas eventually stopped the vehicle in the area of Miramar Avenue and Camino Los Banos; at which time she and three occupants fled on foot from the vehicle.

“Cardenas was apprehended within a few seconds,” said Farwell; adding that one of the passengers, Charlene Ozuna, 39, of San Jacinto, was also apprehended a short distance from the vehicle.

“The two other occupants were able to flee the area before law enforcement could set up a perimeter,” said Farwell.

During their subsequent investigation, deputies determined the vehicle had been reported stolen. Deputies also located and seized narcotics inside the stolen vehicle.

Ozuna was also booked into the Larry Smith Correctional Facility for resisting arrest.

Online jail records indicate both women were still in custody as of this report.
