California Highway Patrol and Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, along with Cal Fire – Riverside, AMR, and other emergency personnel, were dispatched to the scene around 9:20 p.m. after receiving reports of a major injury collision involving a tractor-trailer combo and passenger sedan.
When officials arrived, they found the involved vehicles, along with two victims.
Although the driver of the big rig, described by CHP as a 45-year-old Victorville resident, was uninjured in the collision, the driver of the other vehicle sustained mortal injuries and passed away at the scene.
The Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office has since identified Rafael Marchan, 29, of Wildomar, as the man killed in the crash. A Coroner’s release indicated he was pronounced deceased at 9:27 p.m.
During their subsequent investigation, officers determined the driver of the big rig had pulled off the highway and onto the roadway’s shoulder after hearing a noise coming from his trailer.
Intending to inspect the source of the noise, the big rig driver stopped and parked his truck and was preparing to exit the vehicle when his trailer was struck from behind by a 2006 Honda Accord according to CHP, who said the car’s driver was traveling about 60 mph when his car slammed into the back of the trailer.
The impact left the mangled car crushed underneath the trailer and left the critically injured driver trapped in the driver’s seat of his car.
