Aguanga pedestrian, 77, dies after struck by golf cart inside RV resort

AGUANGA — A 77-year-old man was fatally struck by a golf cart driven by one of his neighbors inside a private Aguanga RV community this morning, Tuesday, Nov. 27. The 73-year-old driver of the golf cart was hospitalized as a precaution after the deadly accident, which happened on Sante Fe North near Santa Fe Ln., inside Rancho California RV Resort.

CHP, Cal Fire, and AMR responded to the collision shortly after 10 a.m., after receiving reports of the accident. When officials arrived they found the elderly victim still down in the roadway with “major head trauma,” CHP spokesperson Officer Mike Lassig later explained.

Based on the severity of the victim’s injuries, he was airlifted to Inland Valley Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries several hours later, around 2 p.m.

AMR transported the driver of the golf cart by ground ambulance to Rancho Springs Hospital “for precautionary reasons,” according to Lassig, who said the man was released later the same day.

Neither of the involved men has been publicly identified, pending further investigation and notification of the deceased victim’s family.

During their subsequent investigation, CHP interviewed a number of witnesses and determined that just before the fatal collision the driver of an EZ-Go golf cart was traveling eastbound on Sante Fe North at approximately 10 mph.

At the same time the victim “was walking on Sante Fe North, in a westerly direction, at the north roadway near Sante Fe Lane,” Meyer explained. As the golf cart was approaching the pedestrian’s location, witnesses observed him suddenly begin to walk across the roadway in a southerly direction, directly in front of the oncoming golf cart.

The front end of his golf cart collided into the pedestrian, according to Lassig, who explained the impact threw the 77-year-old onto the asphalt roadway, “causing major head trauma.”

Lassig did not specify if the pedestrian was inside or near a marked cross walk when he was fatally struck; however, overhead maps of the resort do not indicate the presence of any cross walks near where the collision was reported to have occurred.

Officers from CHP’s Temecula Area Station are conducting this traffic collision investigation, which is active and ongoing.

This is a developing story that will be updated as new information is available.

  • You make it sound like it was the 77 year old fault. But if you ask me the person who was driving the golf cart should be the one responsible for making sure he is watching out for other people. I take great personal offense to your article and I’m not quite sure you have your facts straight. The driver also tried to blame it on the sun being in his eyes, not to mentioned that there is a speed bump in very close proximity to where the accident occurred. As well as a stop sign.

    • I’m sorry you felt my report was not to your liking, Megan. I obtained all my facts directly from CHP and the Coroner’s office. I have included the text of CHP’s fatal collision report, as written by CHP Officer Florez:

On Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at approximately 1010 hours, Party # 1 was traveling eastbound on Sante Fe North at approximately 10 mph in his EZ-Go Golf Cart in the private RV community of Rancho Cal RV Resort. Party # 2 was walking on Sante Fe North in a westerly direction at the north roadway near Sante Fe Lane. As Party # 1 was approaching Party # 2’s location, witnesses observed Party # 2 began to walk in a southerly direction in front of Party # 1. Party # 1’s front end of his golf cart collided into Party # 2. Party # 2 landed on the asphalt roadway causing major head trauma.

CHP, CAL Fire and AMR responded to the collision scene. Party # 2 was airlifted to Inland Valley Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries at approximately 1400 hours. Party # 1 was transported for precautionary reasons by AMR to Rancho Springs Hospital where he was later released the same day.

The California Highway Patrol, Temecula Area is conducting this traffic collision investigation.

If you witnessed the collision or have first hand information and are willing to be quoted I would be happy to include your observations.

      Best wishes,
      -TM
