Woman who ran red light killed in Perris crash with big-rig

PERRIS, Calif. — A woman who reportedly ran a red light in a Perris industrial area and plowed into the passenger side of a tractor-trailer combo was killed early this morning, Saturday, Dec. 12.

The deadly crash, which was captured on the truck driver’s dash-camera, happened at the intersection of Indian Avenue and Markham Street and forced the hours-long closure of the intersection.

Deputies from the Perris Sheriff’s Station, along with Cal Fire-Riverside and AMR, were dispatched to the scene around 2:40 a.m., after receiving reports of a major injury traffic collision involving a big-rig and passenger vehicle, Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant Sergeant Hibbler has since reported.

Deputies arrived within minutes and found a collision involving a silver 2007 Lexus and red 2013 Kenworth and trailer, with vehicle parts and debris spread across the entire intersection and roadway.

The Lexus sustained major front-end damage with airbags deployed, while the Kenworth sustained significant passenger side damage. Neither vehicle were left drivable and both were later towed from the scene. A second tractor was called in to remove the damaged rig’s trailer.

“Tragically, the driver of the Lexus suffered major injuries and succumbed to her injuries at the scene,” officials said.

The victim’s name has not been released pending positive identification and notification of her family.

The big rig driver was uninjured in the collision. He was questioned at the scene and later released.

Due to the circumstances, members of the Perris Station’s Traffic Reconstruction Team responded to the location and assumed the investigation.

Based on their subsequent investigation, deputies determined the woman killed in the collision had been traveling westbound on Markham Street when she ran a red light and smashed into the tractor-trailer combo, which had been heading northbound on Indian Avenue through the intersection.

While investigating the cause of the crash and clearing a large debris field caused by the collision, deputies called for the temporary closure of the intersection; which has since been reopened.

“It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision,” Hibbler said; adding, “The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone who may have witnessed this collision and has not been interviewed is encouraged to call Deputy Cail at the Perris Sheriff’s Station at (951) 210-1068. Callers can refer to incident file number PE203470010 and can remain anonymous.
