Bicyclist hospitalized after Burney accident

BURNEY, Calif., — A bicyclist was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries after crashing while riding in Burney around noon today, Thursday, Aug. 12. Evidence at the scene indicted the accident possibly happened in or near the crosswalk at the intersection of Main St/SR-299E and Mountain View Road, between Speedway Express and Fuel Commander.

California Highway Patrol and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene around 11:53 a.m., after receiving reports of a solo-vehicle accident involving a bicyclist, according to a CHP incident log and official radio traffic at the time. 911 callers reported that no other vehicles were involved and that the injured bicyclist was still in the roadway blocking traffic.

When officials arrived they found the bicyclist still down in the roadway suffering from unspecified injuries to his leg, arm and face. He was transported to Mayers in Fall River for further evaluation and treatment of his minor injuries.

Contacted for further information about the accident, CHP Officer Chris Ogden told SCNS the victim apparently went over his handlebars due to an unknown reason.

“He was a little banged up, but otherwise OK,” Ogden explained.

Although the emergency response caused minor back ups through the busy intersection, which is one of only two traffic controlled intersections in the small town of just 3,200, traffic returned to normal within 30 minutes of the dispatched call.
