Redding police officers and other emergency personnel were dispatched to a private residence in a residential neighborhood just before 4:30 p.m., after receiving a medical aid call, Redding Police Sgt. Brian Torum said after the deadly incident.

As officers and medical personnel were headed to the scene SHASCOM emergency dispatchers received additional information and details indicating that a crime had occurred and that a suspect fled the area.

Dispatchers also received information about the alleged suspect along with his description, according to Torum.

As officers converged on the area they located and detained the alleged suspect, later identified as Nicholas McKenzie, 32, of Redding.

When officials arrived at the home moments later they found an elderly woman suffering from multiple apparent stab wounds.

Although paramedics rushed the bloody and critically injured victim to a local hospital, she later succumbed to her injuries and passed away. She has since been identified as the alleged suspect’s mother, Joan McKenzie, 68, of Redding.

During their subsequent investigation officials uncovered evidence and witnesses that linked Nicholas to the crime and arrested him, according to Torum.

He was later transported to Shasta County Jail in Redding where he was booked on suspicion of murder. Online jail records indicate he remains in custody in lieu of $1 million bail or bond.

Officials have not yet said if there was a known motive for the stabbing or what may have led to the deadly incident.
