Stolen from McArthur, SUV recovered in Burney

BURNEY, Calif. — Authorities today are continuing to investigate the theft of an SUV, after a CHP officer located and recovered the vehicle in Burney early Friday morning, June 26.

The SUV, an older model, silver Suzuki Samurai with multi-colored stripes, had been reported stolen from the McArthur area several days before it was found parked in Burney, CHP Officer Ogden told SCNS while waiting for a tow truck to pick up the stolen vehicle so it could be returned to its owner.

Ogden first spotted the Suzuki parked mid-block on Bartell St., between Park Ave. and Sapphire Rd., shortly after midnight. After checking the vehicle’s license, the officer learned the vehicle was stolen.

The same vehicle had been spotted in the same area the previous night by a couple who observed the vehicle parked in a small cul-de-sac at the southernmost end of Bartell St., south of Sapphire Rd.

When the couple approached the driver to see if he was in need of assistance, the sole male occupant immediately started the vehicle and sped away from the neighborhood at a high rate of speed.

The couple described the white male driver as being in his late teens to early 20s. They further described him as being thin with a slight build, and having dark curly, or wavy hair.

Coupled with that information provided by witnesses, along with other evidence gathered from within the SUV, Ogden said CHP was already following up on several leads related to the vehicle theft.

The stolen Suzuki was eventually towed from the scene to be later turned over to its owner and CHP’s vehicle theft investigation is ongoing.
